Our front door was painted in Benjamin Moore Hale Navy. I really liked the color, but it felt a little dark in this part of our entryway that doesn’t get a lot of natural light. The door also took a bit of a beating during the kitchen renovation last summer and needed a fresh coat of paint regardless. I decided I wanted to go with a muddy blue gray with some green undertones (against the purple). Something that is calm and peaceful and reminds me of the beach, but without being too saturated or “baby” blue. And although I used blue-gray colors in a beach-inspired room, the shade can be beautiful in modern spaces too!

I spent a few hours researching the internet and asked many of my readers what their favorite options were. After collecting all the results, I will share the best blue colors! Somewhat surprisingly, no Sherwin-Williams colors made the list. I think they look great in slightly greener versions of these colors (like Sherwin-Williams Sea Salt). Below are my top picks for the best navy blues!

In early 2019, I tested three paint samples on my front door. From left to right you can see (all Benjamin Moore): Wedgwood Grey, Van Cortlandt Blue and Water Edge. They were all such beautiful options that I don’t think we could go wrong with any of them!

As an update to this original post, earlier this year I used Benjamin Moore Van Cortlandt Blue in our garden. In our house it is completely different from the house upstairs. But both versions are equally beautiful! Our barn faces west, so it gets the warm morning sunlight, which makes it slightly green in color. I believe the upstairs laundry room does not have direct natural light and that may be one of the main reasons it is so different!

Perhaps the grayest of all options, Benjamin Moore Boothbay Gray is now a very popular choice for doors (interior and exterior)! This is another chameleon that will look blue in some lights and very gray in others. I actually tried a swatch of this color in person and this is what it looks like
We used Behr Light French Gray in our last house and it had a really nice tone (because the color is one shade lighter and one shade darker). It is a color that has a beautiful light color that is more blue in some lights and more gray in others. It creates a calm and cool atmosphere in every space, and we love it in our bathroom!
Benjamin Moore Santorini Blue is another beautiful shade of blue, as shown in the living room below! It’s actually a nickname and it’s the Nantucket Fog painted by Benjamin Moore!
