We’ve been living in our house for 6 years and love our black doors. But it has seen better days with so much traffic in and out of our house. I wanted to paint the door myself instead of hiring someone, and I also wanted to see if that’s possible this afternoon.

I’ve never painted my front door and was too nervous to try it. I always skipped it, assuming it was too complicated. I started doing my research and found some simple techniques that have helped me along the way. You can watch the training video on IGTV here.
Finding the right color is key to a successful front door update. You cannot use regular paint for interior walls because your door will also be exposed to the elements. HGTV HOME® has a series called Sherry Williams Brand EVERLAST™ EXTERIOR PINT & PRIMER exclusively at Lowe’s Home Development.

I knew I wanted a new color to match my home’s exterior and decided on the Everlasting Beauty Paint Collection at EVERLAST™ EXTERIOR PINT & PRIMER in Anchors Og (SW9179). It was a deep blue that looked great with the gray tones of my house.
I eventually bought a gallon, but now that I look back, I realize that you can paint your front door using just the gallon.
A representative of Sherry Williams’ HGTV HOME® team was working there when I was there and has been working with them for 23 years! He shared many tips and tricks with me. He suggested the following painting tools for the project:
Neutral Nuance Paint Color Collection
You will want to give your door a light sanding. 180-200 grit is a fine sandpaper and is great for removing scratches or underpainting. Be very careful not to use heavy sandpaper (reduce the number) and not get large scratches on your door. I only lightly sanded the dents and scratches.
Then you clean the door. Using TSP Trisodium Phosphate really removes dirt and grime from the door. Make sure to use gloves as they will damage your skin. After washing, wipe again with a clean cloth. Before you start painting, make sure the door is free of dust and dirt.
Dry magic, you will knock on your door. This chapter is the longest! Take special care to cover the painter’s tape well in areas you do not want to paint.

Then I applied the paint, put on my coloring clothes and was ready to attack the project. Be sure to read the instructions on the back of the box regarding the best time to paint outside. It cannot be too hot or too cold.
I painted the flooring first to get that part out of the way. I mostly used a roller and then a 1.5 inch brush to get into small corners.
As the color went on, I was annoyed because it was lighter than I thought. But when it dried it was exactly what I was hoping for!

I was jumping up and down because I was so excited to see how it turned out! The paint was so thick it filled all the scratches I was worried about.
I then painted the doorknobs with my 1.5-inch brush. I was careful not to paint too much on the flat area of the door so as not to create a brush pattern that I need to cover. I was also careful not to let the color build up. This paint is thick and doesn’t need two coats, so you can be generous.
Then I started over with my roller (generously filled with paint, but not so much where it splits like your roller) and did it in sections. I moved about 1 inch from the old section to start the new section.

This paint dries quickly and if the weather is warm (again, be sure to check the instructions on the back of the box) you can add another coat after 4 hours. If it’s cold, wait 24 hours.
My first coat was fine, but after the first coat was dry, I decided I wanted to add more. After this first layer.
It took me just one day to complete this whole project. It was about 8 hours total due to the drying time, but the time I actually worked was 2 hours. Add in an hour of paint shopping and it was a very quick update for the front door – and it saved me a lot of money!
