Hello friends! Thank you all for so much love in our backyard makeover. The response has been overwhelming and we are really enjoying our new place… we were there before this brutal and super respectable heat wave hit our place and the temps have been over 106 for two weeks now. It’s unbearable there. Needless to say, I can’t wait for it to pass so we can spend more time outside. It’s been so hot lately that we started getting hot even before the outdoor space was finished when one of the biggest projects of the entire remodel: staining the deck. Luckily I was able to finish it before the real burns came. Today I am sharing the process of how I took up this project.
Sherwin Williams Stains For Decks
The biggest goal I want for our outdoor space is to make it feel like an extension of the interior of our home. I really wanted to blur the lines between indoor and outdoor and knew that painting the deck would be a big factor in achieving the end result. As beautiful as natural redwood is, I really don’t want it to look or feel like a conventional wood deck. I love the warmth of our hardwood floor color inside our home and hope to see that outside as well.
Stain Color Buckthorn
Because we used redwood, we had to wait a few months after it was built before applying any stain or protective coating. It allows the wood and oils to dry completely, so it takes the stain better and gives a great color payoff. Construction was completed in February and we let it dry for 5 months before I put it away in July. If you’re working with wood like pine or Douglas fir, you won’t have to wait long to stain. After making a game plan on how to tackle the project, I ordered a curbside pickup from Sherwin-Williams for sheet metal and materials.
I used a variety of brushes, rollers, metal stands, spray pumps, and Sherwin-Williams Superdeck cleaner and stain to complete the project.
As with any painting project, good results start with a clean and well-prepared surface. I started by cleaning everything off the deck and wiping it down. Next, I gave it a good scrub. I use SuperDeck Revive Deck and Siding Brightener to clean and wash the deck. This formula is only used on new or bare cedar, redwood, or pressure treated wood.

I had some help with this part of the project because you need to make sure you don’t let the product dry on the wood while you’re using it. Naomi and I wet the area in small sections and applied Superdeck Revive with a pump sprayer.
After application, he uses a poly-bristled brush to clean the area. We let it sit for about 10 minutes and then rinse with a high pressure hose.
When we almost arrived, the pace was very fast. After cleaning the entire blanket, we let it dry overnight. The next morning the wood looks fresh and renewed and renewed… like new again!
Wood Stain Color Options
Once the deck was washed and ready to be stained, I did one more pass with the brush and taped around the house where the deck meets to protect the exterior paint.
Now it’s time to paint. I chose Superdeck Exterior Waterborne Formula semi-solid color stain. When choosing a stain, you need to consider maintenance and how often to paint it. A good rule of thumb is that the darker or more opaque the transparency, the less frequent the maintenance. Clear varnishes and translucent stains require more frequent maintenance and reapplication, as semi-solid or solid stains last longer before being reused. SuperDeck is great because you can even use it on wet wood.
The SuperDeck stain comes in several color options and I chose the color chestnut SW 3524. I wanted a deep rich brown and this color was perfect when I tried this color a few months ago. I looked once more at the small area
How I Stained Our Deck With Sherwin Williams
Now listen guys… your girl is scared to do her first brush stroke. It’s very scary. We spent a long time building the deck and the last thing I want to do is destroy it. It was a project that really challenged me to trust my vision and process. I started rolling the stain with a small nap roller, then used a 6-inch deck brush to gently pull the brush back to smooth it out. Always apply in the direction of the blade.
There is a bit of a learning curve working with stain because it’s unlike any other stain I’ve used before. Apply it as you would paint and let it sit on the wood for a few minutes, then roll/brush the product on without removing the paint. It took me a while to get my bearings with it, but when I did it went smoothly. I was also working against the heat, so I had to act quickly. After the first day, I realized that I preferred applying the stain with a brush, so I took out my other workhorse brushes (Purdy’s are my favorite!) and used them throughout the project.
Please save me from myself the next time I have a crazy idea to repaint the quilt! As I said it takes forever!!! I didn’t realize how big the blanket was until I hid it. manually Board by Board. It was big and took longer than I expected because of its size. Also, I can only work early in the morning and a little at night when it’s below 90 degrees outside. I suggest you do your quilt dyeing project in the fall or spring when the weather isn’t too hot or cold…just make sure rainy weather isn’t in the forecast. And don’t even get me started on everything. Single. board of directors.
Sherwin Williams Class Action Says Deck Stain Prone To Peeling
It took two days, but I finally finished the first layer. I really want to take my time to get a nice result. Slowly I started to focus.
A good feature of water-based Superdeck Stain is that it dries quickly and can be re-stained. You can apply additional coats after 4 hours, and with a semi-solid finish, you’ll want to apply two thin coats for best results. Depending on the size of your project, this product allows you to complete it in just one day! After doing the second coat, I let it dry overnight before putting everything back on the deck.
After about 48 hours I did a water test to see how well the stain holds moisture and it was amazing to see that the water immediately rose and immediately rolled off.
Best And Worst Wood Stains
I think a lot of people were surprised when I said I kept the deck because we use redwood for construction and people often leave redwood decks in their natural state. It is a very good quality wood with all kinds of decay and resistance to nature/elements. If left untreated or stained, it can become a warm gray overtime. It’s true, it’s beautiful, but I knew I would stain it when we first built it. I am very satisfied with the result. It looks great and really makes this place a resort getaway.
If you are planning to do a deck painting project, I recommend Sherwin-Williams SuperDeck products. They also come in an oil-based formulation that I may try next time I dye a quilt. I’m one of those weird people who really like working with oil-based products because it gives you some control over application time. It dries slower than water-based stains (which is a downside for many), but it does give you a little extra leeway if you want to take your time and get the application right.
