Hello friends! Thank you so much for the great love of our backyard makeover. The response has been great and we are thoroughly enjoying our new space…before this violent and extremely disrespectful heatwave hit our area and the temperature had been over 106 for weeks. It became unbearable there. Needless to say, I can’t wait for it to pass so we can spend more time outside. As hot as it was recently, we started feeling the heat just before the exterior was finished during one of the biggest projects of the whole makeover: painting the deck. Luckily I got over it before the real stinger got here. Today I am sharing the process of how I completed this project.

My biggest goal for our patio is to make it feel like an extension of the interior of our home. I really wanted to blur the lines between interior and exterior, and I knew that painting the deck would be a big factor in contributing to this result. As beautiful as natural redwood is, I really don’t want it to look or feel like an ordinary wood deck. I love the warmth of the color of our hardwood floors in our home, and I hope to reflect that on the outside too.

Sherwin Williams Super Deck Water Based Stain Reviews: Is It Any Good?

Since we used redwood, we had to wait several months after it was done before applying any stain or protective coating to it. This allows the wood and oil to dry well so it can receive stains better and give a good color payoff. The construction was completed in February and we let it dry for 5 months before I painted it in July. If you’re working with trees like Douglas pine or spruce, you may not have to wait long (if at all) before painting. After I created a game plan on how to tackle the project, I ordered a roadside pick for stains and materials from Sherwin-Williams.

I used a set of brushes, rollers, metal washers, spray pump, and Sherwin-Williams SuperDeck cleaner and stain to complete the project.

As with any painting project, good results start with a clean, carefully prepared surface. I started by clearing everything on the deck and sweeping it. Then I gave it a nice brush. I use SuperDeck Revive Deck and Siding Shine to clean and wash floors. This formula is specifically for use on new or uncoated cedar, redwood or stress-treated wood.

I got a little help with this part of the project because you have to be careful that the product doesn’t dry on the wood during application. Naomi and I worked by wetting the area in small sections and applying SuperDeck Revive with a pump sprayer.

Use a poly brush to scrub the area after application. Then let sit for about 10 minutes and rinse with a hose on a high pressure setting.

Once we have a groove, it’s pretty fast. After the entire deck is cleaned, we let it dry overnight. The next morning the wood looked fresh, updated and revitalized… like new again!

With the deck washed and ready to paint, I went with the broom one more time and taped where the deck met to protect the exterior paint.

Now is the time. I chose the SuperDeck Exterior Water Based formula in a Semi-Solid Color Stain. When choosing a deck stain, you should consider maintenance and how often you will need to repaint. A good rule of thumb is the darker or opaque transparency, the less maintenance. Clear coats and clear stains require more frequent maintenance and re-application, whereas semi-solid or solid stains may take longer to reapply. SuperDeck is great because you can even apply it to wet wood.

Restored And Stained My ~10 Year Old Deck

The SuperDeck paint has many color options and I chose Chestnut SW 3524. I wanted a rich dark brown color and when I swatched it a few months ago it was perfect. I returned to coloring the small space to

Now listen guys… your daughter is scared to make the first brush stroke. It’s like fear. We saved a lot of time setting up the deck and the last thing I want to do is ruin it. This is a project that really challenges me to believe in my vision and process. I started by rolling out the stain with a short roller and then using a 6 inch deck brush to gently roll the brush back to flatten it out. Always apply in the direction of the fiber.

There’s a bit of a learning curve to working with smudges because it’s different from other colors I’ve used before. Apply as if you were painting, and after letting it sit on the wood for a few minutes, apply the product with a roller/brush without drying the paint. It took me a while to find my way, but once I did, everything went smoothly. I also work against the heat, so I have to move pretty fast. After the first day, I realized that I prefer to apply stains with just one brush, so I pulled out a few of my other work brushes (Purdy’s are my FAVORITE!) and used them throughout the project.

Please save me when I have a crazy idea to repaint a deck! When I said that it took forever!!! I didn’t know how big the deck was until I had to paint it. with hand. According to the council. It was bulky and took longer than I expected due to its size. Also, I can only work with it for a short time in the morning and then at night when the outside temperature is below 90 degrees. I recommend tackling a deck painting project in the fall or spring when the weather isn’t too hot or too cold…make sure there’s no rain in the forecast. And don’t let me start brushing between each one. only. whiteboard.

Sherwin Williams Woodscapes Stain Review

It took a few days, but I finally finished the first floor. I really wanted to take the time to get a beautiful, even finish. Gradually I could see the visions coming together.

The good thing about SuperDeck paint in a water-based formula is that it allows quick drying and overpainting. You can apply an additional coat after only 4 hours and with a semi-solid top coat you will want to apply two thin coats for best results. Depending on the size of your project, this product will get you done in just one day! After finishing the second layer, I let it dry overnight before transferring everything back to the deck.

After about 48 hours I did a water test to see how moisture resistant the stain was and it was amazing to see the water droplets rising and rolling right away.

I think a lot of people were surprised when I said I was going to paint the deck because we use redwood for the texture and many times people tend to leave the redwood deck in their natural state. This is fantastic quality wood, with properties that are resistant to all kinds of decay and properties/elements. Turns a warm gray over time if not worked or painted. No doubt it was beautiful, but when we first finished it I knew I was going to paint it. I am very satisfied with the result. It looks beautiful and really makes this area feel like a resort.

Sherwin Williams To Launch Comprehensive Deck System

If you’re considering taking up a deck painting project, I highly recommend the Sherwin-Williams SuperDeck product. They also have an oil based formula which I will try next time I need to paint my deck. I am one of those weirdos who really like working with oil based products as it gives you a bit more control when applying. It dries slower than water-based stains (which can be a negative for many) but also gives you a bit more freedom of movement if you want to take your time and really get the application right.

You can also find a lot of information, including helpful information on how to paint a deck and deal with other paint and stain projects.
