Hello friends! Thank you all for your unconditional love for our garden renovation. The response has been great and we are really enjoying our new location… Well, we were there before this wicked and absolutely insulting heat wave hit our area and the temps went over 106 for several weeks. From there it will be incredible. Needless to say, I can’t wait for him to succeed so we can spend more time outside again. As has been the case recently, we started to feel the heat before completing one of the biggest projects in all outdoor renovations: painting the deck. Fortunately, I was able to do this before the real students got here. Today I am sharing the process of how I took up the project.

My main goal for our outdoor space was to make it feel like an extension of our home’s interior. I really wanted to blur the line between indoors and outdoors and knew that staining the deck would be a big factor in contributing to that end result. As beautiful as natural redwood is, I didn’t want it to look or feel like standard wood flooring. I love the warmth of the color of our hardwood floors inside our home and hope to replicate that outside as well.

Because we used red wood, we had to wait months after making it to get a stain or protective coating on it. This allows the wood and oil to dry well, so it will accept the stain better and give a great color payoff. Construction finished in February and we let it dry for 5 months before painting it in July. If you’re working with woods like fir or Douglas fir, you won’t have to wait long before staining. I ordered stains and materials from Sharon Williams when I came up with a game plan on how to tackle the project.

I used a brush, roller, metal disc, spray pump, and Sherwin-Williams Super Deck Cleaner and Stain Kit to complete the project.

As with any painting project, the best results start with a clean and prepared surface. I removed everything from the deck and started cleaning it. Next I gave her a good scrub. To clean and wash the deck, I used SuperDeck Revive Deck and Siding Brightener. This formula is specifically designed for use on new or untreated cedar, redwood, or pressure-treated wood.

I had some help with this part of the project because you have to make sure that you don’t let the product dry on the wood during application. Naomi and I worked in small sections, dampening the area and applying Super Deck Revue with a pump sprayer.

After application, use a polar brush to clean the area. Let it sit there for about 10 minutes and rinse with the hose on the high pressure setting.

Once we found a groom, things happened very quickly. After cleaning the entire floor we let it dry overnight. The next morning the wood looked fresh, fresh and alive….like it was new again!

Tips For Applying Stain To A Wood Fence

When the deck was washed and ready for stain, I did one more pass with duct tape and tape to the house where it meets the deck to protect the exterior paint.

Now it’s time to part. I chose SuperDeck Exterior Water Formula in Semi Solid Color Stain. When choosing a floor stain, you’ll want to consider maintenance and how often you’ll need to reapply. A good rule of thumb is the darker or more opaque the transparent, the lower the maintenance. Clear coats and semi-transparent stains require frequent maintenance and reapplication, while semi-dry or thick stains may require repeated applications. Supercoat is great because you can apply it to wet wood too.

The SuperDeck stain comes in several color options and I chose the Chestnut SW 3524 color. I wanted the perfect deep brown and when I tried the color swatch a few months ago this color was perfect. I changed a small area once again

Now listen guys….your girlfriend was afraid of that first brush stroke. Sounds super scary. We saved a lot of time building a deck and the last thing I wanted to do was destroy it. This was a project that really challenged me to trust my vision and trust the process. I started by rolling over the stain with a small staggered roller and then used a 6 inch floor brush to lightly brush over it to clean it up. Always apply with the direction of the grain.

There was a bit of a learning curve in working with the stain, as it was unlike any other stain I had used before. Apply it as you would paint and let it sit on the wood for a few minutes then roll/brush on the product without removing the paint. It took me a while to get the bearings with it, but when I did it went smoothly. I was also working against the heat so I had to move very quickly. After the first day, I realized that I preferred applying the stain with a brush, so I picked up a few other work brushes (Purdy is my favorite!) and used them throughout the project.

The next time I have a crazy idea to redo a deck, please save me! When I told you it took forever!!! I didn’t realize how big the deck was until I had to stain it. Table by hand. It’s huge and took longer than I expected due to its size. And I could only work on it in the early mornings and evenings when it was below 90 degrees outside. I suggest you tackle a deck staining project in the fall or spring when the weather isn’t too hot or too cold…just make sure there’s no rain in the forecast. And I didn’t start brushing between each one. Board alone.

Power Washing Saved My Deck’s Life

It took a few days but I finally finished the first coat. I like to spend my time to get a good and perfect result. Little by little, I could see the dreams coming together.

The nice thing about Super Deck Stain in a water-based formula is that it dries quickly and allows for recoating. You can apply additional coatings only after 4 hours, and with a semi-dry finish you need to apply two thick layers for best results. Depending on the size of your project this product allows you to complete it in one day! After finishing the second coat I let it dry overnight before going back to the deck.

After about 48 hours, I did a water test to see how well the stain resisted moisture and it was amazing to see the water soak right in.

Modern Pink Deck Ideas You’ll Love

I think a lot of people were surprised when I mentioned that we stain the deck because we used redwood for construction and people often leave redwood floors in their natural state. It is an excellent wood that withstands all types and nature/elements. If left untreated or untreated, it becomes red hot overtime. Sure, it’s beautiful, but I knew I was going to stain it when we first got it. I am very happy with the end result. It looks beautiful and a lot depends on the space as a holiday destination.

I definitely recommend Sharon Williams Super Deck products if you are thinking about taking on a deck staining project. They also come in an oil-based formula, which I’ll try next time I need to stain a floor. I’m one of those nerds who really enjoys working with oil-based products because I like that it gives you a little more control during application. It dries slower than water-based stains, (which can be a negative for many) but it does give you a little more wiggle room if you want to take your time and get the application right.
