Hello my friend! Thank you so much for all your love of landscaping our yard. The response has been great and we’re really enjoying our new space…until this fake and really rough heat wave hit our area and it’s been over 106 for weeks. Yes, it will be ESSENTIAL there. Of course, I can’t wait for it to pass so we can get back to spending more time outdoors. Despite the recent warm weather, we started to feel the heat before the exterior was finished during one of the biggest projects of the whole renovation – painting the deck. Luckily I was able to finish it before the real burn got here. Today I’m sharing how I tackled the project.

The biggest goal I want for our outdoor space is for it to feel like an extension of our home’s interior. I really wanted to blur the lines between indoor and outdoor, and I knew that painting the deck would be a big factor in contributing to that end result. As beautiful as natural redwood is, I don’t want it to look or feel like a regular wood deck. I love the warmth of the wood floor color on the inside of our house and hope to replicate that on the outside.

All About Exterior Stain

Because we used redwood, we had to wait several months after it was built before applying any stain or protective coating. This allows the wood and oil to dry completely, so it takes the stain better and gives better color payoff. Construction was completed in February and we let it dry for 5 months before I painted it in July. If you’re working with a wood like pine or Douglas fir, you won’t have to wait long (if at all) before building. After I came up with a game plan on how to approach the project, I ordered the stain and materials from Sherwin-Williams.

I used an array of brushes, rollers, metal washers, spray pumps, and Sherwin-Williams SuperDeck cleaner and stain to complete the project.

As with any painting project, good results start with a clean and carefully prepared surface. I started by cleaning and dusting everything on the deck. Then I rub it well. I use SuperDeck Revive Deck and Siding Brightener to clean and wash the sub. This formula is specifically designed for use on fresh or untreated cedar, redwood, or treated wood.

I helped with this part of the project because you have to be careful not to let the product dry on the wood during application. Naomi and I worked in small sections to wet the area and apply SuperDeck Revive with a pump sprayer.

After application, he uses a poly brush to clean the area. Then we leave it for about 10 minutes and wash it with a hose in high pressure mode.

Once we got the track, everything went really fast. After the entire floor is cleaned, we let it dry overnight. The next morning the wood looks fresh and renewed and alive…like new again!

How To Refresh Your Deck

After the sub was washed and free of stains, I did another pass with the broom and taped where the deck was directly attached to it to protect the exterior paint.

Now it’s time to bet. I chose SuperDeck Exterior Waterborne Formula in a semi-hard colored stain. When choosing an undercoat, you need to consider maintenance and how often you need to paint it. A good rule of thumb is that the darker or more transparent the opacity, the less maintenance. Clear and semi-transparent stains require frequent maintenance and reapplication, while semi-hard or hard stains can last longer before needing reapplication. SuperDeck is great because you can use it on wet wood as well.

SuperDeck stain comes in many color options and I chose Chestnut SW 3524. I wanted a rich brown color, and when I tried the color swatches a few months ago, this color was perfect. I saw another small area

How To Paint A Deck

Now listen, guys… your girl is afraid of the first brush. A little scared. We saved a long time to build the ship and the last thing I want to do is destroy it. It was a project that made me believe in my vision and trust the process. I start by rolling the stain with a short roller, then gently brush it back with a 6-inch brush to even it out. Always apply in the direction of the grain.

There is a bit of a learning curve when working with the stain, as it is unlike any other stain I have used before. You apply it like you would paint and after you let the paint sit on the wood for a few minutes, you just roll/brush it on without wiping it off. It took me a while to get the hang of it, but once I did it was smooth sailing. I was also working against the heat, so I had to move fast. After the first day, I realized that I preferred to apply the stain with a brush, so I pulled out some of my other working brushes (the Purdy is my FAVORITE!) and used them throughout the project.

Guys, please save me from myself the next time I think about repainting the deck! It took FOREVER when I told you!!! I had no idea how big the deck was until I had to paint it. By hand. According to the plate. It’s huge and took longer than I expected just because of its size. I can only work with it for a short time in the early morning and then in the evening when it’s below 90 degrees outside. I recommend taking on a tire painting project in the fall or spring when the weather isn’t too hot or too cold…just make sure there’s no rain in the forecast. And don’t even get me started on needing a brush in between each one. one board

It took a few days, but I finally finished the first layer. I really want to invest my time so I get good results when it’s done. Eventually I saw the vision coming together.

The good thing about the SuperDeck effect in a water formula is that it gives a quick drying and coating time. You can apply additional coats after just 4 hours, and for best results with a semi-solid finish, use two thin coats. Depending on the size of your project, this product will allow you to complete it in just one day! After I got a full second coat, I let it dry overnight before putting everything back on the bottom layer.

After about 48 hours, I did a water test to see how well the stain held moisture, and it was amazing how the water immediately lifted and rolled off.

I think a lot of people were surprised when I said I wanted to paint the deck because we used redwood for the build and most of the time people leave redwood decks natural. It is a high quality wood with all kinds of rot resistant properties and features/elements. Over time, if left untreated or untreated, it will turn into a warm gray color. Admittedly, it was beautiful, but when we started building it, I knew I was going to screw it up. I am very happy with the end result. It looks beautiful and it really makes the space feel like a retreat.

If you are considering a deck painting project, I highly recommend Sherwin-Williams SuperDeck products. They also come in an oil based formula, which I will probably try when I need to paint the deck. I’m one of those weirdos who likes to work with oil based products because I find it gives you a little more control during application. It dries slower than water-based stains (which can be a negative for many), but it gives you some leeway if you want to take your time and really get the application right.
