Mid Century Modern Kitchen Cabinets – Welcome to our new home! For those who don’t know, we moved into the new house in February (or was it March? I can’t remember) before the quarantine started. It’s a split-level midcentury home built in 1957, and one of our big projects before moving in was updating the kitchen. Well, given the pandemic delay, we may not finish until July. (Actually, we’re not done yet.) And now, of course, we can’t ask anyone to watch it! So I thought I’d give you a little virtual home tour, starting with our remodeled kitchen and dining room.
It actually didn’t look too bad, because the cabinets had a fresh coat of paint when we bought the house. However, it’s original from 1957, so it’s not in the best shape ever. Also check out that crazy old oven. Dishwashers and refrigerators are only slightly better.

My inspiration for kitchen design comes from Sarah Sherman Samuel, interior designer for stars like Mandy Moore! Naturally, we didn’t have a Mandy Moore-sized budget, so we tried to replicate the look with more wallet-friendly pieces.

First we hired Seatown to update the electrical in several areas of the house, which was a fire hazard when we started. In addition to the recessed lighting in the kitchen, I also replaced the pendant light with a pendant globe I got from Target. I think it’s sold out now, but I’ll link some stuff.
We decided to source all new unfinished RTA cabinets from Barker, a PNW based company. The quality is much better than IKEA but still affordable. Sarah Sherman Samuels uses Farrow and Ball Wimborne White and Dove for her cabinet colors, but have you ever noticed how expensive those paints are?? We went with Benjamin Moore colors – Mountain Peak White and Heather Grey.
“We” means “my parents”, who painted all the cabinets for us. Thanks, Mom and Dad! My dad also did all the measuring and he and Jeremy installed the cabinets as well. I actually sat down to criticize everyone, but don’t forget that I was very pregnant at the time, okay??

Our knobs and pulls are from CB2, which I got on sale (Pandemic Silver Plating). Our countertops are from a local Seattle area company called Integrity Stonework. They are great to work with and affordable.
I also love our new farmhouse sink and gold faucet. Has anyone regretted taking the big leap? I don’t think so.
A unique feature of our new kitchen is the appliance garage. Basically, it’s a utility cabinet with a cut-out piece on the back to access the wall outlet. Our frequently used kitchen utensils are placed on pull-out shelves, where they can remain while in use. It saves a lot of counter space and also hides clutter when not in use.

Our dining room wasn’t really remodeled. We just replaced light fixtures from West Elm, bought new furniture, and asked my parents to help paint the walls white. The bar cart in the corner is an old Target cart, now used for tea and snacks. I have to say, I love our dining table from CB2! It’s very sturdy and easy to clean – a must have for our little one. The adjacent credenza is also from CB2, which we found at Mega Sale because it was a floor sample.
And it really is! After the lockdown restrictions were relaxed, we hired a contractor to do the backsplash and install all our new appliances. The last thing we need is to change the place of breakfast. Jeremy is working on building some bench storage and once that’s done we’ll buy a new table.
