Hello friends! Thank you all for so much love for revealing our backyard makeover. The response has been amazing and we are really enjoying our new space… Well WE ARE STARVING before this brutal and extremely disrespectful heat wave hits our area and temperatures have been threatening 106+ for weeks now, outside will be unbearable Needless to say, I can’t wait for it to pass so we can go back and spend more time outside. As hot as it has been lately, we started feeling the heat even before the outdoor space was finished during one of the biggest projects of the entire remodel – painting the deck. Luckily I was able to do it before the real arsonists arrived. Today I’m sharing the process I went through on this project.
The biggest goal I wanted for our outdoor space was to make it an extension of the interior of our home. I really wanted to blur the lines between indoor and outdoor and knew that painting the floor would be a big part of the end result. As beautiful as the natural redwood was, I really didn’t want it to look or feel like a regular wood deck. I love the warmth of the hardwood floor color in our home and was hoping to replicate it outside.
Restore A Deck Wood Stain 1 Gallon
Because we used redwood, we had to wait several months after construction before we could apply a stain or protective coating. This allows the wood and oils to dry completely to better accept the stain and provide excellent color. The build was completed in February and I let it dry for 5 months before painting in July. If you are working with wood such as pine or Douglas fir, you may not have to wait as long (if at all) before painting. After creating a plan to approach the project, I ordered sheet metal and materials from Sherwin-Williams.
I used a bunch of brushes, a roller, a metal stand, a spray pump, and Sherwin-Williams SuperDeck cleaner and stain to complete the project.
As with any painting project, great results start with a clean and well-prepared surface. I started by cleaning everything off the deck and sweeping. Then I cleaned it properly. I used SuperDeck Revive Deck and Siding Brightener to clean and wash the deck. This formula is specially designed for use on new or bare cedar, redwood or pressure treated wood.
I got help with this part of the project as you have to make sure the product doesn’t dry on the wood when you apply it. Working in small sections, Naomi and I wet the area and applied SuperDeck Revive with a pump sprayer.
Things To Do Before Having Your House Painted
After application, he used a brush with polymer bristles to clean the area. Then we let it sit for about 10 minutes and rinse with the hose at high pressure.
Once we got into the groove, everything went pretty quickly. Once the entire blanket has been cleaned, we let it dry overnight. The next morning, the wood looked fresh, renewed and revived…like it was brand new again!
Once the deck was washed and ready to remove the stains, I went one more step with the brush and taped around the house where the deck meets to protect the exterior paint.
Now it was time to paint. I chose SuperDeck Exterior Waterborne semi-solid colored paint. When choosing a stain, consider the frequency of maintenance and painting. A rule of thumb is that the darker or more opaque the slide, the less maintenance. Clear coats and translucent stains require more frequent maintenance and reapplication, while semi-solid or solid stains may last longer before reapplication. SuperDeck is great because you can even apply it to wet wood.
Sherwin Williams Duration Paint Review
SuperDeck paint comes in several colors and I chose Chestnut SW 3524. I wanted a deep, rich brown and this color was perfect when I tested the paint samples a few months ago. I rescanned a small area just to be sure
Now listen up friends… your little girl was afraid to make her first brushing move. Like super scared. I had saved a lot of time building the deck and the last thing I wanted to do was destroy it. It was a project that really challenged me to trust my vision and process. I started by rolling the board over with a short roller, then gently pulled it back with a 6 inch brush to even it out. Always apply in the direction of the blade.
There was a learning curve working with the stain because it was different from other stains I had used before. Apply like paint and simply roll/brush the product on without wiping the paint after letting it sit on the wood for a few minutes. It took a while to get the hang of it, but once I did, it went smoothly. I was also working against the heat, so I had to move pretty quickly. After the first day, I found that I preferred to apply the stain with just a brush, so I pulled out a few other brushes (Purdy ones are my FAVORITE!) and used them throughout the project.

Please save me from myself the next time I have the crazy idea to oil the blanket again! When I tell you it took forever!!! I had no idea how big the quilt was until I had to dye it. By hand. Board by board. It is huge and took much longer than I expected due to its size. I was also only able to get by for short periods in the early morning and later in the evening when it was on.
