I went to the SW store to pick up paint for brushes and trims and was talking to a co-worker about when the next sale would be. He showed me a piece of paper with all the sale dates and the next one is June 9-12.

Used pigmented stain last year and started cracking and flaking in May. Any good price/quality recommendations for deck stains?

Edit: I won’t say that Cutek is not good, but for half the price it works better than any acrylic or water.

How are they south of the border? I’ve read that Canadian formulas are weaker due to environmental/toxicity regulations.

If you compare the range of the two, you’ll see that the price is on par with the Cabot, which is actually not half the price.

I’ve read that Canadian formulas are weaker due to environmental/toxicity regulations. Yes, many American products have a much higher VOC content than Canadian products. I have used all kinds of stains over the years and imo Cutek holds up well provided you are properly prepared. I do not recommend taking any advice or reviews from deckstainhelp.com. This page is basically unbiased from the company behind the most popular recommended products.

Thank you If possible (and cheap) I don’t mind crossing the border and bringing back buckets of stains. While I will have a good 3-4 years of them. I don’t want to stain every summer to extend the life of my deck.

I painted two rooms in our last home and our current home with BM Regal Select paint, but it didn’t sell well over the years.

I bought a few gallons of SW Emerald on sale last month to paint our master bedroom and finally got around to using it this weekend.

I really like SW Emerald. Works well with brushes and rollers and blends well. Coverage per gallon is not as good as BM Regal Select, but the price difference is 40% off ($65+tax for SW Emerald ($110 regular price) versus $95+ regular price for BM Regal Select and $110+ tax for Aura) more than compensates for this

If SW continues to sell these products, the rest of my house will be painted SW Emerald instead of BM Regal Select.

Personally, I chose Cabot because it seemed cheap, oil-based, and easy to use. It is expected to last 1-2 years before reapplication. But since it’s an oil, I’m assuming this will be a supplement, not a complete rebuild. I cover my patio in winter to reduce exposure. It’s also worth noting that my deck is currently stain free and 3-4 years old, making the Cabot selection and process easier.

At the moment I’m going to paint all the interior walls (I need to buy 12 more cans because I think I only need one coat…ruining my wallet).

I walked into Home Hardware a few years ago and there were two liter cans of oil stains on the back shelf. On check out the owner said he couldn’t sell it because it was limited.

I know you can’t buy it to paint a house, but I’ve never seen them for stain either. I think it is exempt from primer and board stains, but not recommended as it contains a lot of volatile organic compounds. Sorry, this offer has ended.
