We want a lot of wall-to-wall wood products that maybe look like they’re floating, but they’re not – because you can’t do that with wood products. We are very happy with the results! 4-10 3/4″ wide x 2 1/2″ thick x 10′ tall Douglas Fir. (We special order them from our local nursery for $33 each)

We custom order the boards because we want them to be a little thicker and with square edges. We were surprised how cheap they were. The edge is still a little rough and uneven, as we expected, so the first step is to attach the edges and cut them to fit the wall exactly. We use a meter well for this. The blade wasn’t big enough to cut the whole board (wah wahhh), so Chris cut it in half, turned the board over, put the blade down with the first cut, and finished cutting.

Although we wanted the shelves to appear to be floating (as in not showing the ropes), we knew this would be difficult to achieve with the size of the boards we were dealing with. The boards are very heavy. So we put the metal angle of 2 inches. These work perfectly because they are short enough to hide behind 2.5 inch boards, but strong enough to hold the weight without bending. Something short does not work if we keep it at the back, but since we put the shelves from wall to wall, there can be brackets at each end to prevent the boards from leaning forward. So after cutting the boards to size, we measured the wall and found 3 equally spaced holes that we could attach the brackets directly to. Unfortunately, there are no studs on the sides that should be there, so we found some heavy duty wall anchors that can hold up to 75 pounds each. We will have two anchors to support each side bracket (4 anchors total of 2 side brackets for each board) and together with the back wall attached directly to the studs, this will make We have a lot of support.

After measuring and deciding where to mount the brackets on the back wall, we marked and took the places of our boards.
